10 Home Security Tips
Most burglars are opportunists looking for easy targets. These simple tips can make your home significantly harder to break into—and less attractive to criminals in the first place.
1. Upgrade Your Deadbolts
Not all deadbolts are created equal. Look for ANSI Grade 1 or 2 deadbolts with at least a 1-inch throw bolt. Cheap locks can be defeated in seconds. A quality deadbolt is one of the best investments in home security.
2. Secure Sliding Doors
Sliding glass doors are a common entry point for burglars. Install a security bar or pin that prevents the door from being forced open. Consider security film on the glass to make it harder to break.
3. Don't Forget the Garage
Many people secure their front door but leave the garage vulnerable. If you have an attached garage, the door to your house should have a solid core and deadbolt—treat it like an exterior door.
4. Reinforce Door Frames
A strong lock is useless if the door frame is weak. Most break-ins happen by kicking in the door, not picking the lock. Install a door reinforcement kit with longer screws (3+ inches) that anchor into the wall studs.
5. Light It Up
Burglars hate light. Install motion-activated lights near all entry points. Keep the porch light on at night. Use timers to turn lights on/off inside when you're away to make the home look occupied.
6. Trim Landscaping
Large bushes near windows and doors provide cover for burglars. Keep shrubs trimmed below window level. Thorny bushes under windows are a natural deterrent.
7. Get to Know Your Neighbors
A watchful neighborhood is one of the best deterrents. Neighbors who look out for each other notice when something seems wrong. Exchange phone numbers and let each other know when you'll be away.
8. Don't Advertise Valuables
- Break down boxes from big purchases (TVs, electronics)
- Close blinds at night so people can't see inside
- Don't leave valuables visible from windows
- Avoid social media posts about being on vacation until you're back
9. Secure Your Mail & Packages
Overflowing mail signals an empty home. Have mail held or collected when away. Consider a package lockbox for deliveries. Porch pirates are a real problem in Orange County.
10. Rekey When You Move
Always rekey or replace locks when moving into a new home. You don't know how many copies of the old keys exist—previous owners, contractors, real estate agents, old tenants.
Bonus: Consider a Security System
Visible cameras and alarm signs deter opportunistic burglars. Even a video doorbell adds a layer of security and lets you see who's at your door from anywhere.
